Visiting Ottawa - Day 1

Posted on Thursday 22 May 2008

Last week, we took a family road trip to Ottawa. My dh travels to Ottawa every year for a conference and we decided to go with him this year. We had a great time and are looking forward to going back next year, too!

Mixed-Up Information

Posted on Tuesday 13 May 2008

I just shooed J and R (a visiting friend) outside because they were annoying P. Previously, I had been watching 2 squirrels running up and down the tree and all around the yard. As I was sending them out, I said, “If you see the squirrels, make sure you leave them alone and don’t go near them.”

J immediately says, “Yeah, especially if they have herpes!”

It took me a minute to realize that he meant RABIES… but I eventually stopped laughing long enough to correct him.

I asked him, “Where did you hear the word ‘herpes’?”

“From a Little House on the Prairie episode,” he says.

Must have been one of those very special episodes, huh? lol Upon further inquiry, I learn that he was remembering the episode where Laura adopts a raccoon and they have a rabies scare.

The best we can figure is that he heard the word herpes from one of the drug ads on TV and mixed it up. At least - I hope that’s what happened!

Happy Mother’s Day

Posted on Sunday 11 May 2008

Js Flowers for Mom

J brought me flowers for Mother’s Day that he picked out himself. Even better than the flowers was his enthusiasm. He came into my room and announced, “Hey mom, guess what! The flowers that I gave you have flowers whose colors haven’t even seen the Earth yet. They’re baby flowers!”

Yet another reminder why I have the best job in the world. :)

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone!

Js Theory on Behavior

Posted on Friday 9 May 2008

Woke up this morning to discover that J had dragged a push pin  through the brand new, $100 bulletin board we mounted in our hallway. It’s the one I wanted since we moved in and waited until I had a  kick-ass coupon and it was on sale…  then had to wait a month  for  my dh to hang it.  Anyway - three grooves going all the way down.   Needless to say, I was angry and he couldn’t tell me why he did it,  so I made him stand there and look at it until he was inspired enough  to come up with a reason.  This is what I got:

“My body is made up of different parts.  One part wanders and does stuff without telling my brain it’s doing stuff.  One part doesn’t wander, but it wants to be bad all the time.  The third part is the  one that wants to be good all the time.  I think the wandering part  and the one that wants to be bad all the time were working together.”

Elementary Science Olympiad

Posted on Monday 21 April 2008

The results are in and P is very excited that he and his partner earned 2 medals at this year’s Elementary Science Olympiad!

ESO Medals

1st Place - 4th Grade - Don’t Bug Me

3rd Place - 4th Grade - Interpreting Graphs

In all, I believe the Tri-State Homeschool team earned 10 medals for the day.  Great job, everyone!

Welcome Spring!

Posted on Sunday 13 April 2008

We have had a few absolutely wonderful days around here. We are definitely eager to spend more time outdoors. Here’s hoping the beautiful weather decides to stay!

J on the DMNH trail

On Friday, we attended a class at the Delaware Museum of Natural History. Both boys have thoroughly enjoyed the science classes this year and are hoping to continue with next year’s series. Friday’s topic was Delmarva Habitats and J, being the ‘nature boy’ that he is, was very happy to get out on the trail.

Boys on the DMNH trail

I’m fairly certain that both boys would have happily explored that trail all day with binoculars and magnifying glasses. One of P’s events in Elementary Science Olympiad has to do with bugs, so this was a great opportunity for him to get up close and personal with them. I, of course, was happily behind the camera. ;) Not big on bugs, myself.

Dirty Salad

Posted on Friday 11 April 2008

My wonderful dh has been making the most decadent salads for us for the past few months. Normally, the word decadent is the furthest thing from the word salad in my mind, but his version is amazing. In fact, we’ve starting calling it Dirty Salad - because it’s really and truly, the only salad that has ever made me feel dirty for eating it. ;)

Js Butterfly

Posted on Friday 11 April 2008

Js Butterfly

This is one of Js painted lady butterflies that we’ve been raising from caterpillars. It’s been a successful experiment. We managed to get 3 butterflies in our little habitat! It was a little sad that the weather was so cool for so long, as we were really hoping to release them, but it still drops lower than 55 degrees.

J’s hoping we may have gotten some eggs and that maybe we can repeat the experiment and set them free now that the weather is getting warmer.

March Burnout

Posted on Monday 10 March 2008

‘Tis the season. Every year around this time, we suffer from burnout, so we try to change things up a bit. For science, we participated in PhysicsQuest 2007 and are getting ready for Elementary Science Olympiad. While that might not seem like it would help with our burnout, it really worked around here. Both boys are very much into science, but too many books and formulaic experimentation tend to suck the enthusiasm right out of them.

J with the Caterpillars
J is much more interested in life science, so our caterpillar/butterfly experiment is right up his alley. He is anxiously awaiting every step in their metamorphosis. It’s also sparked an interest in the weather and climate because he’s hoping we can release the butterflies once they’ve emerged, which requires a temperature above 55 degrees.
